Today, I salute the men and women of our armed forces who not only serve our country but also strive to better themselves through education. The commitment to learning while balancing the demands of military service is truly commendable. Education and knowledge are powerful tools, and by investing in your intellectual growth, you're not only enhancing your own future but also contributing to the strength and effectiveness of our military. Whether you're studying while deployed, attending classes on base, or taking advantage of educational benefits after service, your dedication inspires many. Your decision to pursue education amidst the challenges of military life displays resilience, discipline, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. As you expand your knowledge and skills, you're not just shaping your own path; you're also enriching our armed forces and the communities you serve. The sacrifice for personal and professional development is worth it. Keep striving.

Transitioning from military service to the civilian world can be a daunting prospect. Often, we get so caught up in the minutiae of our past that make it difficult to envision a future outside the military.Think less about:- The rigid structure and hierarchy- The survival and combat skills- The specific military jargon and acronyms- The past deployment experiencesThink more about:- The leadership and management skills you've developed- The work ethic and discipline you've demonstrated- The importance of teamwork and camaraderie- The problem-solving capabilities you've honedYour military service has equipped you with valuable skills that are transferable to the civilian workplace. The key is to translate these skills into language that civilian employers understand and value.Remember, you’re not just a former soldier, sailor, airman, or Marine. You're a proven leader, a team player, and a problem solver. How are you translating your military skills to your civilian career?

I spent this entire week at NATO School Oberammergau attending a NATO course. A very well designed course with great instructors and classmates from so many different nations, professional areas, forces, posts allowing for enriching interactions between military and civilian colleagues. It was an amazing experience that confirms what I have learned in my first few months in the defence and security sector. 1) the level of professionalism among senior officers is very high. 2) military professionals engage with training and formal education (at all levels) much more often than you would expect. 3) NATO is a super interesting international organisation. Just on analysis, research, training and education there is so much going on that you can’t believe it.

I've mentioned to my leadership classes that they are recruiters (outside base) and retainers (inside base and within their commands)... now the US Navy has officially released NAVADMIN 274/23 P4 for a War for Talent. "Every command in the Navy is charged with finding, coaching, and mentoring at least one quality recruit candidate this FY, and each command will shepherd their recruit through the process." So literally, every Sailor is a recruiter. The CNO stated that this is now "Commander's Business," meaning COs are charged with tracking and encouraging recruiting. What kind of recruiter will you be? What kind of Navy do you want your new Sailors joining? How are you making that Navy a reality today?
