What is the best pet adoption site? ›

As a last resort, you may be able to surrender your pet to a local shelter or rescue organization. Each agency will have a different process for surrendering a pet to their care; learn more by visiting their website or by calling ahead.

The trend of relocating animals began in the mid-2000s, when a slew of massive hurricanes devastated the South and left thousands of pets homeless. Shelter dogs, many lost or abandoned by fleeing residents, were moved around the country by volunteers hoping to eventually reunite them with owners.

(Many people come to a specific rescue as a referral from someone who is known by the rescue.) That being said, if it is not a person known to the rescue, they might ask for a non-family member, but usually a family member knows you best, so can provide a great reference.

Whether it's a rescue pup or a family pet, changing owners can be a difficult and traumatic experience for any dog. It's important to recognize the signs of distress in order to help your dog adjust to their new home.

As your puppy gets older gradually increase the total amount of time you leave them alone. Adult dogs are generally okay on their own for 4-6 hours a day. But, many dogs are good at adapting to being alone for 8-9 hours while you are at work if they are provided with enough space to comfortably move around.

If you are rehoming a dog who has bitten a person or other animal, it's important to be fully transparent about the dog's bite history. Depending on the situation and severity of the bite, rescue groups may not be able to rehome the dog ethically or legally.

We can't forget the states with the highest dog adoption rates in the country - Delaware, Maine, and New Hampshire. These states literally have gone to the dogs, with adoption rates of 316.34%, 158.85%, and 149.07%, respectively.

Although the background of the dog may not always be clear, shelters and rescues should know how the dog ended up in their hands. It's a major red flag if they're as clueless as you about the dog's history when asked. The same goes for the dog's age, breed, and behavior.

Pet Adoption Requirements

You must be at least 18 years old with a photo identification. Complete an Adoption Questionnaire (PDF). All animals will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, provided flea treatment and microchipped prior to leaving the shelter.
