Nog een paar dagen en dan is Alien: Romulus, de nieuwste film in de wereld van Alien, uit. Het belooft een spannende en indrukwekkende toevoeging aan de franchise te worden, maar wat moet je nu precies verwachten, en wat moet je eigenlijk al gezien hebben wil je deze film helemaal mee kunnen krijgen? In dit artikel hebben we alles opgeschreven wat je moet weten over Alien: Romulus.
Prequel of sequel
Alien: Romulus is alweer de zevende (of negende als je Alien vs. Predator meetelt) film in de franchise, maar waar speelt het zich precies op de tijdlijn af? Is het nu een prequel of een sequel? Eigenlijk is het geen van beide. Romulus speelt zich af tussen de eerste film, Alien uit 1979, en de tweede, Aliens uit 1986. Het is een soort tussenfilm die verder losstaat van de films uit '79 en '86. Maar als je wat meer context wil voor de wereld rondom Romulus, zijn die twee originele titels van Ridley Scott de go-to films.
Sprekend over Scott, de regisseur van de klassiekers is bij deze film overigens ook betrokken, maar dit keer zit hij niet achter de regieknoppen. Scott werkt aan de film als een producent. Ook James Cameron is betrokken bij de film, maar hij had ditmaal alleen een adviserende rol. De regie wordt dit keer gedaan door Fede Alvarez.
Alvarez is zeker niet ondergeschikt aan Scott en heeft al een indrukwekkende regiecarrière opgebouwd. Hij is vooral bekend van zijn werk aan de horrorfilms Evil Dead (2013) en Don't Breathe (2016). Zijn stijl wordt gekenmerkt door intense spanning en een echte opbouw van angst, wat perfect lijkt te passen bij de donkere en claustrofobische sfeer van de Alien-franchise. Fans kunnen dus zeker hoge verwachtingen hebben van zijn echte horror-benadering van dit nieuwe hoofdstuk in het Alien-universum.
Van de hel naar nog een hel
In Alien: Romulus volgen we een aantal ruimtekolonisten die eigenlijk niets meer te verliezen hebben en uit een helse locatie willen ontsnappen. Om dat te doen besluiten ze in te breken in een verlaten ruimtestation en dure, verboden apparatuur te stelen. Maar zoals je waarschijnlijk al had begrepen, komen ze hierdoor op een nog veel helsere plek terecht. Het ruimtestation is niet voor niets verlaten en de kolonisten, nu omgetoverd tot plunderaars, veranderen al snel in prooidieren voor de beruchte Xenomorphs, chestbursters en de altijd afschuwelijke facehuggers.
Wie speelt erin en waar kan je ze van kennen?
Alien: Romulus heeft een sterke cast die zowel bekende gezichten als opkomende talenten bevat. Isabela Merced is waarschijnlijk de bekendste van de cast. Je kunt haar kennen van haar rollen in Dora and the Lost City of Gold en Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Daarnaast is Cailee Spaeny ook een redelijk bekende actrice geworden vanwege haar grote rol in Civil War. Daar speelde ze Jessy, de jonge fotojournalist. Andere acteurs die we zien zijn Aileen Wu, bekend van een aantal korte films, Archie Renaux uit Shadow and Bone en Morbius, en David Jonsson, bekend van Industry.
Wat is Romulus?
De titel Romulus roept natuurlijk veel vragen op. Het lijkt eigenlijk uit de Romeinse mythologie te komen, daar is Romulus een van de stichters van Rome, wat zou kunnen wijzen op thema's van oorsprong, leiderschap en conflicten tussen de kolonisten. Het zou ook een verwijzing kunnen zijn naar het begin van een nieuwe fase in de strijd tussen de mensheid en de Xenomorphs. Wat de exacte betekenis ook is, het voegt zeker een laag van mysterie en symboliek toe aan de film. Overigens is Alien niet gek van dit soort mythische verwijzingen. Denk maar aan titels als Prometheus.

In the first movie we see the fossilized engineer corpse with the telltale sign of something bursting from his/her chest, but we never see the Xenomorph that became of it. It crawled off to somewhere isolated and dark, and either died or went into extended hibernation.
